About Chandigarh and Mohali

Mohali, also known as SAS Nagar, is a suburb of the City of Chandigarh in the northern part of India located at the foothills of the Himalayas (150 miles north of Delhi). Chandigarh serves as the capital of two neighboring states of Punjab and Haryana. Chandigarh is the first planned city after the independence of India (1947) and is also referred to as The City Beautiful. The master plan of the city was prepared by Swiss-French architect Le Corbusier in the 1950s. Chandigarh has two neighboring cities with similar city planning, Panchkula (Haryana) in the east and Mohali (Punjab) in the south-west. The greater metropolitan area of Chandigarh-Panchkula-Mohali is also known as the Tri-City. The Chandigarh International Airport is located in Mohali - about 8 km (5 miles) from the IISER Mohali campus. The Tri-City has several other academic institutions including Panjab University, Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER), Institute of Microbial Technology (IMTECH), National Institute of Pharmaceutical Education and Research (NIPER), Institute of Nano Science and Technology (INST), National Agri-Food Biotechnology Institute (NABI), Center of Innovative and Applied Bioprocessing (CIAB), Indian School of Business (ISB), and so forth. Many of these institutions including IISER Mohali are located in a cluster called Knowledge City in Mohali.
